May 7, 2014 — The dietary supplements Black Ant, African Black Ant, and Mojo Risen have been recalled because they may contain sildenafil and tadalafil, according to an announcement issued by Eugene Oregon, Inc. and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
An FDA analysis detected hidden pharmaceutical drug ingredients in products that were distributed to a third party. According to the FDA:
“Conclusive testing has not been done to confirm that the products do, in fact, contain sildenafil and/or tadalafil and this recall is being executed as a precuationary measure. To date, Eugene Oregon, Inc. has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.”
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is a prescription drug that treats erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, is another prescription drug used for the same purpose. The problem is that both drugs can interact with prescription medications that contain nitrates and cause low blood pressure. By law, dietary supplements are not allowed to contain prescription drugs.
Life-threatening drug interactions can occur with medications for the treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Because erectile dysfunction is a common complication of these health problems, there is a serious risk that people who use Black Ant, African Black Ant, or Mojo Risen could develop health problems.
FDA Recalls for Black Ant, Mojo Risen
- March 16, 2011 — FDA recommends against using Black Ant after detecting Viagra (sildenafil) at doses that were three times the starting dose for Viagra.
- June 10, 2013 — FDA recommends against using Mojo Risen after finding noracetildenafil, an ingredient that is structurally similar to Viagra (sildenafil).
