May 19, 2014 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a recall of 1.8 million pounds of ground beef distributed by Wolverine Packing Company after 11 people were sickened with E. coli O157:H7.

Recalled products were sold for restaurant use in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio. Each product is marked with the establishment number “EST. 2574B” and has a production date code in the format “Packing Nos: MM DD 14” between “03 31 14” and “04 18 14”.
Investigators identified 11 case-patients in four states with onset of illness ranging from April 22, 2014 to May 4, 2014.
This strain of E. coli causes a severe, life-threatening type of food poisoning that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps for 2-8 days (3-4 days, on average). Some people develop a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), with symptoms like easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output.
E. coli is a common bacteria that grows in the intestinal tract of humans and many animals. It spreads when feces contaminates food, usually from water, soil, or during the slaughtering process. Thoroughly cooking ground beef can kill the E. coli bacteria. Beef should be cooked until it is no longer pink and a meat thermometer reads 160ºF.
