Illness Information
In interviews, 33 (79%) of 42 sick people reported eating bean sprouts or menu items containing bean spouts in the week before becoming ill, mostly in Asian-style restaurants.
The dates of illness onset range from September 30, 2014 to November 10, 2014. Out of 43 patients with available information, 11 (26%) were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Source of the Outbreak
Wonton Foods, Inc., is based in Brooklyn, New York. Some restaurants also received bean sprouts from other suppliers, but Wonton Foods was the only supplier common to all of the restaurants and was the sole supplier of bean sprouts to at least two of the restaurants.
No recall has been issued. However, on November 21, Wonton Foods said they would stop production and sales of bean sprouts while they take steps to prevent Salmonella contamination.
Where Did Illnesses Occur?
As of November 24, the following number of sick people have been identified in each state: Connecticut (4), Maine (3), Massachusetts (31), Montana (1), New Hampshire (4), New York (5), Ohio (1), Pennsylvania (10), Rhode Island (6), and Vermont (3). The one case in Montana was a person who traveled to the Eastern United States.
Salmonella Enteritidis
The outbreak has been linked to the Salmonella Enteritidis strain, one of the most common serotypes. An infected person usually develops symptoms beginning 12-72 hours after consuming contaminated food or water, including:
- Nausea, vomiting
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
The illness usually lasts 4-7 days, and most people recover without needing antibiotics. However, some people need to be hospitalized for severe dehydration, blood infections, or other life-threatening complications.
What is the problem?
Raw bean sprouts are a common source of food poisoning. The problem is that bacteria likes to grow in the same warm, moist conditions that beans need to sprout. There have been over 30 outbreaks of food poisoning associated with bean sprouts since 1996. In May 2014, at least 10 people were infected in an outbreak of E. coli, which was traced to raw clover sprouts. Click here to read more.
