Many people have been severely burned when anesthesiologists disconnected the hose from the 3M Bair Hugger blanket and blew hot air directly onto their skin. In patients with poor circulation, the risk of burns injuries is even higher. According to one case report (PDF), a 40 year-old woman suffered 3rd-degree burns after 110ºF air was blown onto her body during surgery. She had permanent scarring despite skin grafts and plastic surgery. Her lawsuit against the anesthesiologist was settled for $250,000.
