UPDATE: Hyundai Recalls 390,000 Vehicles for 2 Fire Hazards
In May 2021, Hyundai issued two recalls for about 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada due to separate defects that can both cause engine fires.
Hyundai Santa Fe Sport: The first recall involved about 203,000 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs (2013-2015 models), due to problems with leaking brake fluid sparking engine fires. The recall expands an earlier recall from September 2020 involving Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs (2015-2017 models). At least 18 engine fires have been linked to the leaking brake fluid issue.
Hyundai Elantra, Kona, Veloster: The second recall involved around 187,000 vehicles with defective pistons that could damage the engine and cause oil leaks. At least 5 engine fires were linked to the problem. The recalled vehicles include:
- Hyundai Elantra (2019-2020 model years)
- Hyundai Kona EVs (2019-2021 model years)
- Hyundai Veloster (2019-2021 model years)
Hyundai Kona EV Battery Fires
In October 2020, Hyundai recalled more than 11,000 Kona Electric Vehicles (2019-2020 models) in the U.S. and Canada after 13 battery fires were reported worldwide. Hyundai Tuscon SUV Fires
In January 2021, Hyundai expanded a recall to include another Tucson SUVs (2016-2018 models) because an electrical short-circuit could cause engine fires.
Back in September 2020, Hyundai recalled about 180,000 Tucson SUVs (2019-2021 models) to fix the same problem. The recalls were announced after dozens of reports of fires in the engine compartment.
