What Happened?
On Friday, November 5, 2021, Houston rapper Travis Scott was the headliner at the Astroworld Festival located in NRG Park in Houston, Texas. The sold-out show had around 50,000 fans in attendance.
The chaos began early. At around 2 p.m., a stampede of people destroyed the VIP entrance, bypassed security, and climbed over fences.
At around 9:00 p.m., as a timer counted down to the beginning of Travis Scott’s performance, the people in front were crushed together so tightly they were unable to breathe, move their arms, or get out. People began to fall and lose consciousness, which created additional panic, according to Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña.

Another 25 people were hospitalized with severe injuries, such as going into cardiac arrest. Two people later succumbed to their injuries and died in the hospital, including a 22-year-old Texas A&M student and a 9-year-old boy.

Travis Scott’s Long History of Being Arrested for Urging Crowds to Rush Stage, Jump Barriers & Balconies
Travis Scott (whose real name is Jacques Webster) has a long history of causing mayhem at his shows, ending in tragedy…
May 2017 — Travis Scott was arrested for inciting a riot after he encouraged people to rush the stage at the Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion in Rogers, Arkansas. Several people were injured in the chaos, including fans, security, and a police officer.
April 2017 — Travis Scott was filmed encouraging fans to jump off a balcony at a show in New York City. Fans described the event as “severely overcrowded” and out-of-control. Kyle Green, a 27-year-old man, was paralyzed after being pushed off a 3rd-floor balcony. He filed a lawsuit alleging that security “picked him up like a sack of potatoes” and hauled him out “without a cervical collar, backboard and other safety precautions.”
August 2015 — Travis Scott was arrested for urging fans to jump the barricades at the Lollapallooza Festival in Chicago. Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management said: “The performer played one song and then began telling fans to come over the barricades. Due to the security’s quick response, the situation was remedied immediately and no fans were injured. The performer fled the scene and was taken into custody a short while later. He is being charged with disorderly conduct.”
