Texas Woman With 3rd-Degree Burns Files Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

October 9, 2024 — A woman from Texas who suffered 3rd-degree burn injuries when her Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker exploded has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer.

The plaintiff, Ashley J., is a resident of Princeton, Texas, who claims that she was seriously injured on January 16, 2023, while using a defective Ninja Foodi® Pressure Cooker (Model #OP300-I07).

On this occasion, she was using the “sear” function, which is a non-pressurized setting, with the lid on. The unit was not releasing any pressure or steam. When she decided to open the lid to add more ingredients, she did not encounter any unexpected resistance.

However, as she opened the lid, “extremely hot” liquid exploded out of the pressure cooker and severely burned her torso and arm. According to the lawsuit:

“As she removed the lid from the pot, she was immediately struck by boiling-hot cooking liquid that spewed out from the pressurized Ninja Foodi. … She went to the hospital for treatment of 2nd and 3rd-degree burns to her torso and left forearm.”

Her lawsuit claims that the Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker is “defectively designed” and “unreasonably dangerous” because it can pressurize when the lid is not adequately secured. She also claims that the lid can open when the contents of the pot are under pressure.

She is seeking compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, physical impairment, disfigurement, mental anguish, physical pain and suffering, and other damages due to this incident.

The lawsuit was filed against SharkNinja Operating LLC, which is the manufacturer of the Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker and other products.

Her lawsuit was filed on September 19, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas (Sherman Division) — Case Number 4:24-cv-00836-SDJ.
