The hormones in Beyaz have been associated with a three-fold increased risk of blood clots. When a blood clot travels to the brain, it can cause a severe, life-threatening stroke. A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks the supply of blood to brain tissue, causing severe brain damage.

Overview
Beyaz is a birth control pill that contains a combination of two hormones: drospirenone (3-mg) and ethinyl estradiol (0.02-mg). The amount of these hormones is the same as is in Yaz birth control. Both Yaz and Beyaz are sold by Bayer. Beyaz was approved by the FDA in September 2010.
What is the risk of pregnancy while taking Beyaz? The guidelines for taking Beyaz are relatively simple: take one pill every day, at the same time every day. This is intended to keep the amount of hormones constant in a woman’s body, which reduces the risk of pregnancy and side effects of massive hormone fluctuations. When Beyaz is taken exactly as intended, fewer than 1 woman per 100 get pregnant. Unfortunately, not all women take Beyaz exactly as intended. Women frequently miss a dose or take the pill at different times. For these women, approximately 9 per 100 get pregnant.
Why does Beyaz contain folate? In the event that a woman gets pregnant, it is important to have normal folate levels before the pregnancy occurs. This reduces the risk of neural tube birth defects, which occur when the fetus’s neural tube fails to close completely. Neural tube defects include spina bifida, anencephaly, and more. Beyaz reduces the risk of these severe, life-threatening birth defects.
Beyaz and Stroke
The FDA is now warning women who use birth control pills that if they take a pill containing drospirenone (such as Beyaz) they may have up to a three-fold increased risk of suffering a blood clot. The Beyaz labels will soon be updated to include this information.
When a person has an ischemic stroke, a blood clot clogs a blood vessel that normally supplies oxygen-rich blood to brain tissue. Without oxygen, brain cells start to die within minutes. Once a brain cell dies, there is no way to regenerate this lost connection or repair it. Though therapy can help a person re-learn how to perform certain activities, brain damage is irreparable.
If circulation is not restored, large sections of the brain will start to die. This is called the ischemic cascade, and it occurs when a biochemical reaction causes otherwise healthy, unaffected parts of the brain to become severely inflamed and swollen. This can cause severe brain damage to parts of the brain that were not involved in the initial ischemic stroke.
Brain damage can cause severe injury. A person who suffers a Beyaz stroke can easily become physically disabled or suffer cognitive impairment. They may go permanently comatose. In rare but severe cases, an ischemic stroke can cause death.
Symptoms of a Beyaz Stroke
The symptoms of an ischemic stroke vary in severity. They may be relatively benign, if the blood clot is small and only a small section of the brain is affected. Or, they may be very severe, sudden, and can quickly cause death. Any time a stroke is suspected is an emergency situation. Symptoms of a Beyaz stroke include:
- Headache: The headache is usually very sudden, severe, and debilitating, but it may also be gradual and throbbing. Sometimes, a headache caused by a stroke is strong enough to awaken a person from sleep.
- Change in consciousness: Suddenly feeling very sleepy, dizzy, or weak. The person may suddenly lose consciousness and faint.
- Changes in cognition: Memory loss, forgetfulness, confusion, disorientation, personality changes, inability to read, write, or understand language.
- Changes in motor control: Sudden poor balance, inability to walk, falling, etc.
- Changes/loss of sensation: Vision becomes blurry or is lost; abnormal tastes and smells or loss of these senses; strange sensation of temperature; etc.
- Tingling, numbness: This is usually localized on one part of the body, such as the arms or legs.
- Muscle weakness: This is usually just one one side/part of the body, such as the arms or legs. Muscles on half of the face may droop
