Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Filed Against Amazon

June 19, 2024 — A man who was burned by a pressure cooker has filed a product liability lawsuit against Amazon.com and Midea America Corp.

The plaintiff, Roice C., is a resident of New Mexico who claims that he was injured while using a defective Instant Pot DUO Pressure Cooker.

According to the complaint, he bought the Instant Pot from Amazon.com in 2017. In July 2022, he was using it to cook food when he suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries.”

He claims that he was burned when he was able to open the lid when the Instant Pot was still pressurized, which caused scalding-hot food, liquid, and steam to be ejected out of the pot and onto his body.

The lawsuit alleges that the Instant Pot DUO is defective because the “safety mechanisms” do not lock the lid until all of the pressure has been released and the product is safe to open.

The lawsuit was filed against Midea America Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. on May 16, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico — Case 1:24-cv-00482.
