Baby Food May Contain Toxic Heavy Metals

What is the Problem?

Few parents are aware that many popular baby foods commonly contain toxic heavy metals that are known to cause brain damage. Some of the worst offenders are baby foods that contain rice, sweet potatoes, carrots and fruit juice, but many other ingredients can be contaminated with toxic metals, like vitamins, minerals, or enzymes.

What is the Risk?

Babies who eat a lot of food that is contaminated by toxic metals can develop serious health problems. In recent years, studies have found evidence that baby food may be linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder — but unfortunately, few parents are aware of the risk because there are never any warning labels, and manufacturers rarely issue recalls.

Baby Food Recalls for Toxic Metals

Here are two examples of baby foods that were recalled due to high levels of arsenic in the rice ingredients:

Why Does Baby Food Contain Toxic Metals?

Toxic metals are found naturally in the environment, but they can also contaminate farmland due to human activities — for example, using certain pesticides or fertilizers, mining activities, using wastewater or sewage to water crops, or growing food on land that is downwind of an industrial site, or located on a former dump for toxic chemicals.

Arsenic in Rice

Rice is a particular high-risk food for arsenic contamination. Arsenic is common in the soil and water in many regions of the world where rice is grown. Farmers flood rice paddy fields with rice that is contaminated with arsenic, and over time, arsenic accumulates in the soil. Rice plants also absorb more arsenic compared to other crops.

Healthy Babies (HBBF) Report

In October 2019, an investigation by the group Healthy Babies & Bright Futures (HBBF) found that 95% of tested baby foods contained toxic metals that can harm brain development. Alarmingly, many of the baby foods they tested (especially products with rice, sweet potatoes and fruit juice) contained dangerous amounts of mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium, which have the highest risk of causing neurotoxic side effects like autism.

United States Congressional Report

In October 2021, a Congressional Subcommittee report confirmed that many popular baby foods contained dangerously high levels of toxic metals — but manufacturers did not issue recalls.

For example, some baby foods contained 91-times the FDA limit for arsenic in bottled water, 177-times the FDA limit of lead, 69-times the FDA limit on cadmium, 5-times the FDA limit on mercury.

The authors of the report warned:

“Manufacturers knowingly sell these products to unsuspecting parents, in spite of internal company standards and test results, and without any warning label whatsoever.”

Types of Autism Spectrum Disorders

  • Autism
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Rett Syndrome
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
  • Kanner’s Syndrome
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a range of developmental disorders that affect verbal and non-verbal communication. People with autism have a range of symptoms, but they commonly have deficits in communication and social skills, limited interests, sensory issues, and repetitive behaviors.

Baby Food Class Action Lawsuits

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed by angry parents who fed their children baby food that was contaminated by heavy metals. These lawsuits accuse manufacturers of putting profits over public safety.

In recent years, a growing number of individual lawsuits have also been filed for children with autism. These parents are seeking justice and financial compensation for their child’s pain and suffering, medical expenses, decreased quality of life, and more.
