Beyaz contains drospirenone, which is associated with a higher risk of blood clots. When a blood clot travels to the lungs, it causes a life-threatening condition known as a pulmonary embolism.

Overview
Beyaz is a birth control pill that is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Beyaz to reduce the risk of pregnancy. It can also reduce mild acne and treat Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). Beyaz contains the same amount of active hormonal ingredients as Yaz birth control pills (3-mg drospirenone and 0.02-mg ethinyl estradiol). The major difference between Beyaz and Yaz is that Beyaz also contains 0.451-mg levomefolate calcium, which is a metabolite of folic acid.
Beyaz contains a folate vitamin because, occasionally, women do get pregnant while taking a birth control pill. Beyaz reduces the chances of getting pregnant, but if a pregnancy accidentally occurs (approximately 9 women out of 100 who do not take Beyaz exactly as directed will get pregnant), Beyaz also reduces the risk of a severe neural tube birth defect such as spina bifida or anencephaly.
Beyaz and Pulmonary Embolisms
The problem with Beyaz comes from the ingredient drospirenone. Since 2009, the use of birth control pills containing drospirenone has dropped sharply, after several studies involving hundreds of thousands of women in the U.S. and Britain found that drospirenone-containing birth control pills may be riskier than other birth control pills. Some studies have found a three-fold increased risk of blood clots. In April 2012, the FDA announced that all labels on drospirenone-containing birth control pills will be updated to include this risk information.
Beyaz blood clots can be deadly. A blood clot is a semi-solid mass of coagulated blood platelets. They naturally form at the site of injuries and prevent blood loss. Beyaz increases the risk of developing spontaneous, deep-vein blood clots where there are no injures (in a condition called Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT). Even women with no history of blood clots have developed life-threatening blood clots while taking a birth control pill containing drospirenone.
Beyaz blood clots grow along the walls of veins, which carry blood directly toward the heart and lungs. If the blood clot breaks away from the vein wall, it can be pumped inside the heart, and into the lungs. This is called an embolism.
Any size of blood clot will eventually get stuck in the lungs, because the blood vessels get very small. The blood clot cuts off the supply of blood to tissues in the lungs. If the blood clot is large, most of the blood supply to the lungs may be cut off. This causes a severe pulmonary embolism. Once lung tissue is deprived of blood, it starts to die. A severe pulmonary embolism can be deadly within 30-60 minutes of the event.
Symptoms of a Beyaz Pulmonary Embolism
The symptoms of a pulmonary embolism may or may not be preceded by the gradual onset of symptoms of a blood clot, which usually include pain, swelling, and discoloration of a limb. A blood clot is an emergency situation, and you should seek treatment immediately. The earlier the treatment, the better. Prognosis is best when a doctor can prevent a blood clot from causing a pulmonary embolism. All women who take a birth control pill containing progestin have a risk of developing blood clots, so they should be aware of the symptoms of serious side effects.
When a pulmonary embolism occurs, the symptoms usually appear quite suddenly, though not always. Symptoms may include, but are not limited to:
- Sudden, inexplicable shortness of breath, which does not resolve when resting
- Respiratory distress — rapid, shallow breathing
- Chest pain, discomfort, or aching in the chest, which may be localized on one side
- The chest pain may worsen with coughing, deep breath, or movement
- Coughing, which may be bloody
- Loss of alertness or consciousness, fainting, dizziness
- Anxiety, nervousness, feeling like something is wrong
