Beyaz side effects include blood clots, pulmonary embolism, stroke, heart attack, and death. Beyaz contains drospirenone, a synthetic hormone that increases a woman’s risk of developing a blood clot more than 75% over other birth control pills. Blood clots are a severe, life-threatening Beyaz side effect.

What is Beyaz?
Beyaz is a once-daily hormonal birth control pill that is used to prevent pregnancy. It was invented by the pharmaceutical company Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September of 2010.
Beyaz contains the following active ingredients:
- 0.02-mg synthetic estrogen (ethinyl estradiol)
- 3-mg synthetic progestin (drospirenone)
- 0.451-mg folic acid (levomefolate calcium)
Beyaz is essentially Yaz plus folic acid, a B-vitamin dietary supplement. The FDA recommends that all women of childbearing age consume at least 0.4-mg of folic acid every day. Research has conclusively linked folate deficiencies to severe neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Neural tube defects occur during the first 2-3 weeks of pregnancy, before a woman is aware of a pregnancy. This is why it is important to have sufficient folate levels before pregnancy occurs.
What is the difference between Beyaz and Yaz?
You may have used Yaz initially, and then switched to Beyaz when it was approved in 2010. Yaz and Beyaz both contain the same amount of active hormonal ingredients (ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone). Both medications are equally effective at preventing pregnancy, and have the same side effects. They are both approved to prevent pregnancy, reduce mild acne, and reduce Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). Both medications are created and sold by Bayer.
The only major difference is that Beyaz contains folic acid, a dietary supplement that is intended to reduce the risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect.
Beyaz and Drospirenone
Beyaz, Yaz, and other “fourth generation” birth control pills contain drospirenone, a newly-developed version of progestin, a female reproductive hormone. All birth control pills that contain synthetic progestin slightly increase a woman’s risk of developing a blood clot. With drospirenone, the risk may be 75% higher than with older generations of synthetic progestin. In real numbers, this means that instead of 4-6 women per 10,000, around 10 per 10,000 women taking drospirenone are expected to develop a blood clot.
Beyaz and Blood Clots
When you decided to use Beyaz, you may or may not have been aware that this medication has been linked to an increased risk of blood clots. Even if you were aware of this risk, you may not have realized that blood clots can easily be life-threatening, causing organ damage, organ failure, brain damage, disability, or death.
One Beyaz side effect is elevated potassium levels, which increases the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). When a person has DVT, a blood clot forms in a deep vein in the lower leg, thigh, pelvis, or upper arms. It may or may not cause symptoms. If the blood clot travels in the blood stream, it will move until it becomes trapped in a smaller blood vessel.
If an embolism forms in the lower body, the heart will pump it into the lungs. Inside the lungs, blood vessels become very small. The embolism becomes trapped in the lungs and the tissue inside the lungs begins to die. This is called a pulmonary embolism, and it is one of the most common Beyaz side effects related to blood clots. If the embolism forms in the left side of the heart or in the upper body, it can become trapped in the heart, brain, or other internal organs. When this occurs, heart attack, ischemic stroke, organ failure, brain damage, and death are all possible Beyaz side effects.
Beyaz Side Effects
The most severe Beyaz side effect is death
If you were not aware of the risk of Beyaz side effects when you decided to use this medication, it is not your fault. Drug companies that manufacture and sell these medications have a legal obligation to warn you of the risks before you decide to take their medication. If they fail to warn you of the risk, then you may wish to seek financial compensation and justice for your injury by filing a Beyaz lawsuit.
Beyaz side effects include, but are not limited to:
- Depression
- Blood clots
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
- Pulmonary embolism
- Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
- Stroke
- Gallbladder disease
- Pancreatitis
- Hyperkalemia (toxic high levels of potassium)
- Irregular heartbeat (heart arrhythmia)
- Psychological trauma
- Death
