Coffee workers can develop “Coffee Lung” disease (also known as bronchiolitis obliterans) by breathing toxic fumes from roasting, grinding, or storing coffee beans. Several victims have already received settlements after filing lawsuits.

Coffee Lung
“Coffee Lung” is also known as bronchiolitis obliterans, a severe and life-threatening lung disease. It causes chronic inflammation, scarring, and narrowing in the tiniest airways deep inside the lungs.
Bronchiolitis obliterans gained notoriety in the early 2000s after hundreds of microwave popcorn factory workers were sickened. Investigators discovered their disease was caused by breathing diacetyl, a chemical used in artificial butter flavoring.
What is the problem?
Unfortunately, diacetyl is often added to flavored coffee. It is also created naturally when a raw coffee bean is roasted, ground, or stored in hoppers for “off-gassing” before packaging. Workers in any of these areas of coffee processing are at risk for “Coffee Lung.”
Symptoms of Coffee Lung
- Persistent dry cough
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Obstructive airway disease
- Fever
- Weight-loss
Texas Coffee Lung Lawsuit Settlements
The first “Coffee Lung” lawsuit was filed in 2012 by a group of five people who worked at a Distant Lands Coffee roasting plant in Tyler, Texas. All of the victims were disabled by lung disease, including one person who was on a lung transplant list. In 2014, the victims agreed to a confidential settlement.
What is the problem?
The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm in Texas, but we are not filing a class action lawsuit. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of workers who were developed “Coffee Lung” disease against coffee roasting and grinding companies.
About Class Actions
Class actions are designed to maximize efficiency rather than compensation for individual plaintiffs. They are particularly useful when a lot of people need a refund for a defective product. If compensation is awarded, everyone in the class action shares equally.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
Class actions can have major problems for people with severe injuries. They may have to accept a “low-ball” settlement or massive attorneys’ fees that leave little payout remaining for everyone in the lawsuit.
Instead of a class action, our lawyers focus our efforts on helping individuals with the most serious injuries. We believe there is no excuse for failing to protect employees from hazardous working conditions.
If you developed lung disease after working with coffee, you could be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, permanent disability, lost income, and more.
