Colsen Fire Pit Recall for “Flame Jetting” Hazard
In October 2024, nearly 90,000 Colsen Fire Pits were recalled due to a “flame jetting” fire hazard. At least 19 people have been burned, some quite seriously.
A growing number of lawsuits have been filed by the survivors, including one lawsuit from a man who was burned over 40% of his body.
What Is The Problem?
There are serious safety hazards when liquid alcohol is being poured to refill the Colsen fire pit reservoir. Alcohol flames can be invisible, which can result in “flame jetting” if the stream of alcohol catches fire.
How Many People Were Burned?
The recalled Colsen fire pits were linked to 31 reports of flame jetting, or flames escaping from the container, which resulted in 19 burn injuries. Some of these burn injuries were very severe.
According to the recall warning:
“Two incidents resulted in third degree burns to more than 40% of victims’ bodies, and at least six incidents have involved surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement.”

What Is Flame Jetting?
Flame jetting happens “when fire flashes back into the alcohol container suddenly propels burning alcohol out of the container and onto people nearby,” according to the recall warning from the CPSC.
The burn injuries can be extremely severe. In recent months, survivors have published graphic photos of their 3rd-degree burns to raise awareness about the safety hazard.
Flash Fires Can Cause Severe Burns In Seconds
Flash-fires can occur if alcohol splashes, spills, or leaks out of the fuel reservoir for a Colsen fire pit while it is being used. Flash fires can also spread and create larger, hotter flames that escape the unit.
These “serious and deadly” burns and fires can happen very quickly, according to the recall:
“Use of the recalled fire pits can lead to injury quickly and unexpectedly, causing burns in less than one second that can be serious and deadly.”
What Are Colsen Fire Pits?
Unlike traditional fire pits, Colsen® fire pits are small tabletop accessories. They are tiny (ranging in size from 5-inches to 18-inches wide). These decorative fire pits look unique, but they are hazardous.
Colsen fire pits consist of a concrete container that is open on top, where the flame shoots out. They are fueled by burning liquid alcohol. The fuel that Colsen recommends using is 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, which creates a smokeless flame. It is also extremely flammable.
Who Sold Colsen Fire Pits?
The recalled Colsen fire pits were sold on https://colsenfirepits.com, Amazon.com, Wayfair, Walmart, Shaper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, Facebook (Meta) and TikTok. They were sold nationwide from January 2020 to July 2024 for between $40 and $90.
The fire pits came in two colors (black or gray) and 7 models, depending on the shape. The shapes included a skull, rectangle, hexagon, circle, and square. The recall involves all of these models.
Can I Get A Refund?
No. Colsen is not giving refunds for the recalled fire pits. The company said it “does not have the financial resources to offer a remedy to consumers.” Instead, safety officials are urging customers to throw away the recalled fire pits immediately.
