Cook IVC Filter Information

Cook Medical manufactures several retrievable IVC filters, which are intended for short-term protection from pulmonary embolism. They are usually implanted in people with deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) who cannot take a blood-thinning medication.

Cook Medical IVC filters include:

• Cook Günther Tulip: Approved in Europe in 1992 and the U.S. in 2003. Designed with 12 filter wires and 4 legs to capture blood clots in the top of the filter while still allowing blood-flow through the vena cava.
• Cook Celect: Approved in 2008 under the 510(k) approval process. In a study of 115 people, researchers warned that failed retrieval due to hook endothelialisation continues to be an issue.

Safety Risks & Complications

Retrievable IVC filters should be removed after a patient is no longer at risk of pulmonary embolism. After 3 to 4 months, there is a much higher chance that the filter will fracture, migrate, perforate an organ, or become embedded in the wall of the vena cava.
