Cook IVC Filter Information
Cook Medical manufactures several retrievable IVC filters, which are intended for short-term protection from pulmonary embolism. They are usually implanted in people with deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) who cannot take a blood-thinning medication.
Cook Medical IVC filters include:
- Cook Günther Tulip: Approved in Europe in 1992 and the U.S. in 2003. Designed with 12 filter wires and 4 legs to capture blood clots in the top of the filter while still allowing blood-flow through the vena cava.
- Cook Celect: Approved in 2008 under the 510(k) approval process. In a study of 115 people, researchers warned that failed retrieval due to hook endothelialisation continues to be an issue.
Safety Risks & Complications
Retrievable IVC filters should be removed after a patient is no longer at risk of pulmonary embolism. After 3 to 4 months, there is a much higher chance that the filter will fracture, migrate, perforate an organ, or become embedded in the wall of the vena cava. When these complications occur, it can be difficult or impossible to remove the filter. In 2010, the FDA published a Safety Communication to warn about these risks.
