Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) is a rare side effect of Factive (gemifloxacin) that was first included in the Medication Guide in 2004. The FDA issued new warnings about Factive and peripheral neuropathy in 2013 to emphasize the side effect and include new warnings about the rapid onset and potentially permanent nerve damage.

What is Factive?
Factive (gemifloxacin mesylate) is an antibiotic that is primarily used to treat bronchitis and pneumonia. It belongs to a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones that work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. It was prescribed to less than 1% of people who received oral antibiotics in 2011.
Medication Guide on Factive Updated to Include Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy warning on the Factive Label (PDF):
“Symptoms may occur soon after initiation of Factive and may be irreversible. Factive should be discontinued immediately if the patient experiences symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, including pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness or other alterations in sensations including light touch, pain, temperature, position sense, and vibratory sensation.”
FDA Warning for Factive and Peripheral Neuropathy
August 2013 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published this Safety Announcement after receiving alarming reports of peripheral neuropathy in patients on fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as Factive. According to the FDA:
“In some patients the symptoms had been ongoing for more than a year despite discontinuation of the fluoroquinolone. Several patients were continued on the fluoroquinolone drug despite the occurrence of neuropathic symptoms.”
What Should I Do?
Discuss the potential risk of Factive side effects with your prescribing physician. You should talk about symptoms of peripheral neuropathy and what to do if you experience symptoms. You should also familiarize yourself with the Medication Guide for Factive.
Seek emergency medical attention if you develop symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Do not wait — permanent nerve damage can occur within a matter of days on Factive, and you will probably need to switch to another antibiotic. However, do not stop taking Factive without first talking to a doctor.
Contact a lawyer for Factive lawsuit information. If you were injured, you are not alone — our lawyers are concerned that inadequate side effect information may have contributed to your injury.
What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Factive is associated with a type of peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) called sensorimotor polyneuropathy. This condition occurs when signals between the brain, spinal cord, and body are interrupted. Complications include paresthesia (abnormal burning, prickling, or tingling sensations), numbness, chronic pain, and muscle weakness. In severe cases, this can lead to problems walking, balancing, using limbs, and fine motor skills.
Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy
- Paresthesia (nerve pain, burning, tingling, etc.)
- Numbness
- Muscle weakness
- Abnormal sensations (touch, temperature, pain, etc.)
- Problems balancing
- Decreased sense of body position
- Abnormal reflexes
- Loss of motor coordination
- Muscle atrophy
