August 3, 2018 — Five people were seriously burned in a series of natural gas pipeline explosions in Midland County, Texas, according to Reuters.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. The 5 people who were injured were airlifted to Lubbock, Texas for treatment at the University Medical Center burn unit. One victim was a firefighter.
Part of the El Paso Natural Gas Pipeline (EPNG) has been isolated, according to the pipeline operator, Kinder Morgan:
“There was a third-party pipeline involved that also experienced a failure, and preliminary indications are that the third-party line failure occurred before the EPNG line failure.”
There were apparently multiple explosions and pipeline failures. After firefighters suppressed the first fire, a second and third explosion occurred about 1 hour later.
The oil pipeline explosion and fires occurred about 5 miles south of Highway 158 at around 11:30 a.m. on August 1, 2018.
