Gerber Teething Stick Recall

On January 31, 2025, Gerber Products announced that it would recalled and discontinue all batches of Gerber® Soothe ‘N’ Chew Teething Sticks due to a choking hazard.

What Happened?

There were multiple reports of babies who choked on a Gerber Soothe ‘N’ Chew Teething Stick, including one baby who was rushed to the hospital emergency room.

No deaths or serious injuries were reported when the recall was announced in January 2025. Gerber also did not say how many complaints it received from parents who said their baby choked.

There was an unspecified number of “consumer complaints of choking incidents. To date, one emergency room visit has been reported to the firm.”

What Teething Sticks Were Recalled?

Gerber recalled the following teething stick products:

  • GERBER® SOOTHE N CHEW® TEETHING STICKS – STRAWBERRY APPLE, Net Wt. 3.2 Oz (90g), with UPC 0 15000 04618 7, all lot codes
  • GERBER® SOOTHE N CHEW® TEETHING STICKS – BANANA, Net Wt. 3.2 Oz (90g), with UPC 0 15000 04608 8, all lot codes

How Long Have Parents Been Complaining?

Gerber recalled the teething sticks in January 2025, but there have been online complaints since 2023 from angry parents who said their babies choked on a now-recalled Soothe ‘N’ Chew Teething Stick.

In 2023, one parent wrote: Beware of gerber soothe n chew sticks!

“We had a very scary moment a few weeks ago when our daughter (then 7 months) choked on a piece that broke off. They’re supposed to slowly dissolve, and I had to flip her over and hit her back to dislodge the piece that was stuck.”

Another parent posted online in April 2024 after her 6-month-old son choked on a Soothe ‘N’ Chew Teething Stick. She wrote: “Yesterday a piece broke off and got lodged in his throat and we had to do the Heimlich maneuver to get the piece out.”

How Do Babies Choke?

Teething sticks are edible products that are supposed to dissolve in water as a baby chews on them. Babies can choke when chunks of the stick break off, or the gummy food accumulates into a lump on the roof of their mouth (and parents may not be aware this is happening).

What is the Risk?

No deaths were linked to Gerber Soothe ‘N’ Chew Teething Sticks, but choking is a life-threatening emergency that can be deadly, especially if a parent is unable to use the Heimlich maneuver to clear the airway.

“If your brain goes without oxygen for more than four minutes, you could have brain damage or die,” warns the National Library of Medicine.

What Should I Do?

Gerber is warning parents not to give Soothe ‘N’ Chew Teething Sticks to their babies or young children. The product can be returned to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

“Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider,” according to Gerber.
