Lyft $1 Million Insurance Policy
When a Lyft driver is providing a ride or on the way to pick up a passenger, Lyft offers $1 million in liability insurance, which includes uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage. In comparison, ordinary drivers in California may only have a $30,000 policy for injury or death.
What Happens When You Are Injured by a Lyft Accident?
Lyft passengers who were injured in car accidents are typically eligible for up to $1 million in compensation to cover pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost income, permanent disability, and more.
Lyft drivers who are injured may or may not be covered. Lyft provides some coverage when the app is in “Driver Mode” before the driver has received a ride request. The policy has a $50,000 maximum limit per person, $100,000 maximum per accident, and $25,000 for damage.
Lyft will pay drivers up to $1,000,000 for injuries and damage in car accidents that occur between the time a driver accepts a ride until the time the ride has ended, so long as the driver was not responsible.
Deadly Lyft Car Accident Lawsuit
The first wrongful death lawsuit against Lyft was filed after a deadly car accident on a rainy Halloween night in 2014 near Sacramento. The victim, Shane Holland, 24, was one of two passengers in the Lyft. His driver swerved to avoid a stalled Kia in the middle of Interstate-80, lost control, and hit two trees. Holland died at the scene of the crash.
Lyft Accident Lawsuit Settlement
In July 2015, Holland’s mother and injured boyfriend filed separate Lyft car accident lawsuits for wrongful death and personal injury. After an 18-month settlement delay, they accused Lyft of “dragging its heels.”
How Can a Lyft Accident Lawyer Help?
Lyft maintains that its drivers are independent contractors rather than employees, which can make it more challenging to hold Lyft responsible for car accidents — especially if the Lyft driver was not “on-duty,” carrying a passenger, or on the way to pick one up.
Lyft may be financially responsible for your injuries if you are:
- A passenger in a Lyft injured in a car accident
- A Lyft driver injured in an accident that was not your fault
- Another motorist in an accident with a Lyft that was not your fault
It is important to talk to a lawyer if you were injured in a Lyft accident. There are serious issues that can arise when a Lyft driver is “on the clock” but not carrying a passenger when the car accident occurs. Lawyers can help you seek compensation when Lyft refuses to pay.
