Smiths Medical Recalls ProPort Implantable Port

In March 2025, Smiths Medical and the FDA announced a Class 1 Recall for thousands of ProPort Plastic Implantable Ports due to a manufacturing error that poses severe, life-threatening safety risks.

What is the Problem?

ProPort Plastic Implantable Ports were recalled due to a manufacturing error that may cause the plastic port housing to separate from the port reservoir.

This separation may cause the port to leak medications, fail to deliver life-saving medications in an emergency, other life-threatening complications (such as an air embolism, which is when air bubbles enter a vein and block it), or death.

This separation may occur before, during, or after implantation of the ProPort Implantable Port. Smiths Medical warned about a risk of “serious adverse health consequences,” including death.

How Many Patients Were Injured?

No deaths were reported, but Smiths Medical said there were 2 reported injuries at the time of the recall.

What is the Risk?

The recalled ProPort Plastic Implantable Ports have been linked to 2 patient injuries and many health risks, including:

  • Complications from the delay or interruption of life-saving therapies
  • Damage or scarring to skin or tissue surrounding the port from contact with leaking intravenous medications such as chemotherapy
  • Air entering the bloodstream (air embolism)
  • Death

What Happened?

On February 13, 2025, Smiths Medical sent doctors an “Urgent Medical Device Recall” letter to warn about safety risks with the ProPort Plastic Implantable Port, recommending the following actions:

  • Monitor patients who have an implanted ProPort Implantable Port for signs of any adverse events
  • Make sure the housing and reservoir feel secure and stable when palpating the portal.

Smiths Medical also listed symptoms of a ProPort Implantable Port that has leakage or other problems:

“Symptoms such as swelling, redness, or discomfort at the implant site may indicate leakage or system failure.”

Signs & Symptoms of ProPort Failure

Patients should seek medical attention for symptoms of failure or leakage from an implantable port, such as:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Discomfort at the implant site
  • Air embolism symptoms
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Chest pain
    • Low blood pressure
    • Stroke
    • And more

What is a Class 1 Recall?

Class 1 recalls are the FDA’s highest-level safety recall, reserved for the most serious safety hazards. “This device may cause serious injury or death if you continue to use it,” according to the FDA.

Hundreds of Implantable Port Lawsuits Filed in MDL

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed by people who were injured by implantable ports that broke, leaked, had high rates of complications, or were defective. Many of these lawsuits involve the Bard PortPort. These lawsuits have been centralized in a federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in Arizona.
