Symbyax Overview
Symbyax is an antidepressant medication classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). As an SSRI, Symbyax acts on certain chemicals in the brain and balances them to help reduce the symptoms of major depressive disorders. However, recent evidence suggests that Symbyax may be responsible for serious adverse health effects in newborns born to women who took the medication while pregnant.
In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) addressed the potential hazards associated with pregnant women taking antidepressants like Symbyax.
In a warning issued that same year, the FDA acknowledged the birth defect risks associated with mothers taking Symbyax while pregnant. Mothers who take Symbyax while pregnant may increase the risk of their child developing a severe, life-threatening congenital birth defect.
