What Do Trulicity Lawsuits Claim?
Trulicity lawsuits accuse pharmaceutical companies of aggressively promoting Trulicity and other GLP-1 diabetes drugs, without fully warning patients about the risk of severe gastrointestinal side effects.
What Side Effects Are Linked to Trulicity?
A growing number of lawsuits have been filed by people who used Trulicity and developed side effects, such as:
- Stomach paralysis
- Gastroparesis
- Ileus

Trulicity MDL
Trulicity lawsuits are being filed nationwide. These lawsuits are being consolidated into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) for people who developed gastrointestinal side effects of GLP-1 diabetes drugs, which also includes drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Mounjaro.
The Trulicity MDL is in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, under U.S. District Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg.
The case is MDL 3094 In RE: Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAS) Products Liability Litigation.
Case Report Links Trulicity and Small Bowel Obstruction
In May 2020, doctors published a case report of a 52-year old man who had to have part his intestines surgically removed after using Trulicity for just a few weeks: Trulicity; An Anti-Diabetic Medication Causing Small Bowel Obstruction.
Small bowel obstruction is a life-threatening surgical emergency, according to the doctors. In this report, a 52-year-old man with diabetes was hospitalized with severe nausea, vomiting, and pain.
The man had been taking Trulicity for 3 weeks before he was hospitalized. Unfortunately, he had to have part of his small bowel surgically removed due to “severe ischemia,” or tissue death.
According to the researchers:
“Dulaglutide (Trulicity) is associated with small bowel obstruction. The side effect is more common in males and in patients who are using the medication for less than one month. A total of 8 cases were reported in 2017 with majority of them requiring surgical intervention for the small bowel obstruction. In our patient, it also required a surgical intervention and was life threatening.”
What is Small Bowel Obstruction?
A small bowel obstruction is a blockage in the intestines. It is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when food and fluids do not move normally through the intestines.
The symptoms of a small bowel obstruction may include:
- Severe abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Bloating
- Constipation
- And more
What is the Risk?
Left untreated, a blockage in the intestines can be life-threatening or deadly. The blockage may cause tissue death in the intestines (called “ischemia”) which must be surgically removed. The intestines can also tear or rip apart, which can lead to sepsis and death. Patients who are unable to digest food and liquid may also develop dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, blood-sugar problems, and malnutrition.
Trulicity Lawsuits Claim Drug-Makers Failed To Warn About Risks
Trulicity belongs to a class of diabetes and weight-loss drugs that mimic a gut hormone called GLP-1 (Glucagon-like Peptide-1). It slows down digestion, which makes a person feel full longer and eat less.
Unfortunately, some people develop severe nausea and vomiting due to “stomach paralysis,” or gastroparesis, a side effect that occurs when the movement of food through the digestive system slows down.
Lawsuits accuse pharmaceutical companies like Eli Lilly & Co and Novo Nordisk of failing to adequately warn patients about this risk.
These lawsuits claim that drug-makers failed to warn patients that Trulicity and other GLP-1 diabetes drugs “cause gastroparesis and other gastrointestinal injuries, whether defendants adequately warned plaintiffs or their prescribing physicians about the alleged dangers of these products, and whether defendants made false, misleading, or incomplete representations regarding the safety of these products.”
