Tuna Recalled in Texas for Scombroid Fish Poisoning Risk

In October 2019, Mical Seafood Inc. of Florida expanded a recall to include tuna products sold in Texas due to a risk of scombroid fish poisoning.

The recall involves Tuna Loins, Tuna Poke, Tuna Steaks, Tuna Ground Meat, and Tuna Saku (products of Vietnam) with production dates between 04/01/2019 and 05/31/2019.

The tuna was wholesaled to customers in 23 states, including AL, CA, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NV, NY, PA, RI, TX, UT, VA and WI.

The original recall on October 1 was issued after four people suffered scombroid fish poisoning. The recall involved frozen, wild-caught yellowfin tuna poke cubes, tuna loins, tuna ground meat and 6oz tuna steaks with production dates between 04/02/2019 and 05/14/2019.

What is Scombroid Fish Poisoning?

Scombroid fish poisoning is an illness that occurs when people eat certain types of fish that were not properly refrigerated. Bacteria on the partly-spoiled fish produce histamine, which triggers an allergic reaction called scombroid poisoning in anyone who eats the fish.

Signs of Scombroid Fish Poisoning

The symptoms of scombroid fish poisoning usually appear within a few minutes. In most cases, the symptoms go away within a few hours, but some people may suffer more serious complications.

The symptoms of scombroid fish poisoning can include:

• Tingling or burning sensation in the mouth
• Facial swelling
• Rash
• Hives and itchy skin
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
