Zimmer Persona Knee Replacement Recall
March 2015 — After less than three years on the market, about 11,700 Zimmer Persona knee replacements have been recalled following reports of the devices loosening prematurely, causing symptomatic problems, and needing revision surgery.
The Class II recall was issued after Zimmer received about 6 complaints involving loosening per every 1,000 devices that were implanted, which is a higher rate than similar devices.
According to Zimmer, 36% of the complaints involved patients who had symptomatic problems or needed revision surgery due to loosening. They warned:
“Aseptic loosening of cementless tibial implant components is one of the most prevalent causes for revision in total knee arthroplasty and a number of factors may contribute to the loosening failure mode.”
All lots and sizes C-J of the implant were recalled. They were sold from November 2012 until early 2015 throughout the United States, including Arkansas, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
What are Radiolucent Lines?
The Zimmer Persona was recalled due to “an increase in complaints of loosening and radiolucent lines.” About 28% of complaints involved asymptomatic radiolucent lines.
Radiolucent lines are lines that are seen on X-rays, appearing dark on the exposed film. They are risk-factors for knee replacement failure, associated with early loosening of the acetabular component of a knee replacement.
